At the Speed of Falling (2022) with Carlo Dolci's Angel Gabriel (1660)

At the Speed of Falling is a metal structure modeled after a go-go dancing platform stage that existed in Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where 49 people were killed in a 2016 mass shooting. This work is paired with Carlo Dolci’s painting Angel Gabriel (1660).
Archangel Gabriel is known as the archangel of artists, is always depicted holding lilies, and has been portrayed as different genders across time in religious art.
Approaching the queer club as a site of sanctuary, gathering, and worship, this work draws a parallel between the physical relationship of go-go dancers on elevated stages above club attendees to that of guardian angels overlooking humanity, or priests in pulpits preaching to churchgoers.
